The Newton Medical Center office building off Interstate-135 in stands out from the rest of the buildings on the Newton medical campus. While most buildings are glazed with green glass, the exterior facade of the Newton Medical Center is distinguished by the steel blue-gray appearance of PPG Industries' Solarban z50 low-e glass coupled with opaque blue ISpan spandrel glass from ITI Glass.

Solarban z50 is a neutral-gray low-e glass developed by PPG Industries to provide high levels of daylighting with excellent solar control performance. The spectrally selective nature of Solarban z50's low-e coating allows plenty of visible daylight to transmit into the building's interior while infrared radiation from the sun—the main cause of heat gain in buildings—is reduced.

Blue ISpan ceramic frit spandrel from ITI Glass is an opaque glass designed to hide building structure meterials. Coupled with Solarban z50 gives the Newton Medical Center a unique exterior appearance. Spandrel also reduces the total amount of heat gain in buildings by blocking solar radiation as well as visible light.
